Kenya Muthuaini AB | espresso

Kenya Muthuaini AA is sourced from family owned farms organized around the Muthuaini Factory (wet mill) in Nyeri County, Kenya. The Mutheka Farmers Co-operative Society manages the Muthuaini Factory, which processes cherry from members who generally cultivate around 200 coffee trees on half-acre plots. Small plots give these producers more control to strategically pick and deliver only the ripest cherry to the factory. Additional cherry sorting is also done at the factory before the coffee is depulped, fermented and washed. After the coffee is washed, it’s soaked in fresh water for long periods of time to solidify the hallmark Kenyan profiles.

Muthua-ini is a Kikuyu name for “a place with many ants”, this place was famous of the ants which destroyed almost everything including the plantation of sugarcanes and had built very long ant hills which were visible from a far distance.

  • Region: Nyeri County
  • Producer: Muthuaini Factory
  • Altitude: 1700 masl.
  • Preparation: washed | Hand sorted to separate green cherries or overripes, after that al the floaters are separate through the use of floatation thanks and than are depulped on a disc pulper. At this point the pulped cherries undergo an overnight ‘dry’ fermentation before being washed and then fermented under water. The cherry is then washed again before being rested in the soaking tanks, and then moved to the raised beds on the gentle slopes outside. It is common for the cherries to be covered at night and midday to help maintain temperatures constant.
  • Variety: SL 28 and SL 34 |Bourbon-Typica Group. SL28 is among the most well-known and well-regarded varieties of Africa. It has consequently spread from Kenya, where it was originally selected in the 1930s, to other parts of Africa (it is important in Arabica-growing regions of Uganda, in particular) and now to Latin America. SL34 was selected from a single tree on the Loresho Estate in Kabete, Kenya since research at the Scott Laboratories was often conducted in cooperation with local, private estate owners. The tree was labeled “French Mission.” However, recent genetic tests have indicated that SL34 is related to the Typica genetic group. It is possible that the original story about SL34 being selected from a French Mission population could be incorrect.
